Door Lock Jammed or Key Won't Turn? What to Do

By Uncle Thomas, locksmith since 1998 · Updated October 2026

A jammed lock usually gives some warning first: a key that catches, a door you have to pull hard to lock, a latch that drags. Then one day it doesn't move at all. Here's how to work out what's wrong and what to try, without making it worse.

What exactly is stuck?

Why locks jam in Singapore

  • Humidity and rain. Gate locks and corridor-facing doors take the most weather, and rust builds up inside.
  • Doors that drop or swell. Hinges wear and wooden doors swell in humid weather, so the bolt starts rubbing on the frame.
  • Worn keys and locks. A key that's been copied from a copy, or a lock that's been used daily for many years.
  • Slamming. Gates and doors that are slammed shut knock lock parts out of line.

Safe things to try

  1. Take the pressure off the bolt: push or pull the door towards the frame, or lift it slightly by the handle, while turning the key.
  2. Try the spare key. If the spare works, your main key is worn.
  3. Use a lubricant made for locks, such as a dry graphite or PTFE lock spray, in the keyhole. Avoid cooking oil, which gums up the lock.
  4. Turn gently. If it doesn't move with normal hand pressure, stop.

What not to do

  • Don't use pliers or force the key. Keys snap inside locks, which turns a jam into a bigger job. If it has already happened, see broken key extraction.
  • Don't kick the door. HDB main doors are often fire-rated, and a damaged door or frame is expensive to put right.

Quick Answers

Why won't my key turn in the lock?

Often the door has dropped or swollen so the bolt rubs on the frame, the key is worn, or there's dirt or rust inside. Push the door towards the frame while turning, and try a spare key.

Can I use WD-40 on a jammed lock?

Use a lubricant made for locks, such as dry graphite or PTFE spray. Heavy oils can collect dirt and make the lock stickier over time.

My door is locked and the lock is jammed. Can you open it?

Yes, 24/7. We open it damage-free wherever possible and can replace the lock in the same visit.

Do you repair jammed locks?

No. We replace worn or jammed locks with new ones, which come with our no-expiry warranty.
