Digital Lock for Your HDB Gate: Supply and Installation

The short answer: installing a digital lock on an HDB gate starts from S$150 for labour. We can supply the lock, or fit one you've already bought. What we check on your gate first

A gate lock that looks right in the shop may not suit your gate. Before recommending or fitting anything, we look at:

• The frame and the space for the lock. Most HDB metal gates take a rim lock, which mounts on the surface. Some frames are deep enough for a mortise lock, which sits inside. See HDB gate lock types.
• How the gate closes. If the gate has dropped on its hinges, the bolt won't meet the frame cleanly, and a digital lock will struggle to lock or keep showing errors. We check this before anything is fitted and tell you what's needed.
• The bars around the lock. On an open-bar gate, the inside of the lock can be reached through the bars. It's worth choosing a lock, and a position, where the inside release isn't easy to reach from the corridor. We'll point this out on your gate.
• Rain and corridor washing. Which way the gate faces, and whether water runs straight onto the keypad.
• Your main door lock. If you want the gate and door to share codes, fingerprints and an app, both locks need to come from the same range.

• You've already bought one. Send us the model and photos of your gate before the visit, so we can check it suits your gate's frame.

Gate lock vs main door lock

They look alike, but a gate lock faces different conditions and rules:

• Fire rating. SCDF's certification rule, in force since 1 March 2024, covers digital locks fitted on fire-rated doors. Many HDB main doors are fire-rated, so if you're buying a matching gate and door set, check the door lock's certificate. See digital locks on fire-rated doors.
• Weather. The gate lock lives in the corridor. Choose one sold for gates, with its water resistance stated in the specifications.
• Power. In a matching set, the gate and door locks run on separate batteries. Change both together, and make sure the gate lock has an emergency power point or a backup key.

HDB rules

Changing the lock on your existing gate is a routine job. If you're replacing the whole gate at the same time, the HDB renovation guidelines say the new gate must keep the original width, number of panels and swing, must not block the escape route, and along a common corridor must leave at least 0.6m to the parapet wall. Renting? Ask your landlord before changing any lock.
