A digital or smart lock on your HDB gate means no more fumbling for keys with shopping bags in hand. But a gate lock lives a tougher life than a door lock: it's outside, it gets wet, and it takes knocks. Choosing the right one saves you a lot of trouble later. Here's what Uncle Thomas looks at before recommending a gate lock.
Rim lock or mortise lock?
- Rim gate locks mount on the surface of the gate. They suit most metal HDB gates and are quicker to install, because nothing needs to be cut into the gate frame.
- Mortise gate locks sit inside the gate's frame. They look neater and can be stronger, but only fit gates with a suitable frame, and installation takes more work.

Weatherproofing matters most
Corridor rain, washing and humidity are the main reasons gate locks fail. Look for a lock sold specifically for gates, with a covered or sealed keypad, and ask about its water resistance. Positioning matters too: a lock that faces straight into the rain will age faster.
Power: batteries and backup
Every digital and smart lock runs on batteries. Check:
- How long the batteries typically last, and how the lock warns you when they're low.
- Whether there's an emergency power point outside (9V or USB) for when the batteries die.
- Whether there's a mechanical backup key.
Gate and door as a matching set
Many brands sell a gate lock and a main door lock as a set, with the same codes, fingerprints and app. It's convenient, but remember they run on separate batteries, so check both when one starts acting up.
Smart features: what's worth it
- App access and temporary codes: useful for landlords, helpers and visiting family.
- Fingerprint: fast, but have a PIN as backup for wet or cut fingers.
- Wi-Fi or hub connection: lets you check the lock remotely, but uses more battery.
Rules and permissions
If you rent, ask your landlord before changing the gate lock. If you own the flat, check with your town council or HDB if you're also changing the gate itself.
