Lost Your Safe Key or Override Key? What to Do

By Uncle Thomas, locksmith since 1998 · Updated October 2026

Safe keys get lost in drawers, moves and spring cleans, and override keys are often put away so carefully that nobody can find them. What you can do depends on whether the safe is open or locked, and what kind of key it is.

Which key have you lost?

  • The only key to a key safe: the safe can't be opened without it.
  • The key on a dual-lock safe (code plus key): you need both, so a lost key locks you out even with the right code.
  • The override (emergency) key on an electronic safe: you can still use the code day to day, but there's no backup when the batteries die or the electronics fail.

If the safe is still open

Don't close it. Leave it open and ask a safe locksmith about replacing the lock or getting a new key set while it's easy. For an electronic safe with a lost override key, at least replace the batteries now and keep spares.

Getting a replacement key from the maker

Some manufacturers supply replacement keys if you can prove ownership. You'll usually need:

  • The safe's serial number, often on a label on the outside or inside the door. SentrySafe, for example, puts it on a label on the outside of the safe.
  • The key number, if it's stamped on the key or noted in the paperwork.
  • Proof of purchase and ID. Some makers ask for a signed or notarised letter.

This can take days or weeks, especially when the brand's service centre is overseas. If you need the safe open sooner, a safe locksmith is faster.

If the safe is locked and the key is gone

Don't try to pick, pry or drill it yourself. A safe locksmith can open it, and in many cases fit a new lock with new keys so the safe can keep being used. See safe lock replacement.

Where to keep safe keys

  • Never inside the safe.
  • Somewhere secure and separate, such as a locked drawer elsewhere, with a trusted family member, or at the office.
  • For a business, record who holds each key, and get keys back when staff leave.

Quick Answers

Can a locksmith open a safe without the key?

Yes. A safe locksmith can open it after checking proof of ownership, and can often fit a new lock with new keys.

Can I get a replacement safe key from the manufacturer?

Some makers supply one with the serial number, key number, proof of purchase and ID. It can take days or weeks.

Where is the serial number on my safe?

Usually on a label on the outside of the safe or inside the door. SentrySafe puts it on a label on the outside.

I lost the override key but the code still works. Is that a problem?

Only when the batteries die or the electronics fail. Replace the batteries now, keep spares, and consider getting a new key set or lock.
